General Food Services

Meals are offered to each patient three times per day, according to a four-week cycle menu. The weekly menu is posted on the units and indicates what is being served each day. In addition to breakfast, lunch and dinner, a snack is offered to each patient in the evening by the unit staff.

The menus are planned using the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service's Food Guide Pyramid and Recommended Daily Intakes in order to provide nourishing and balanced meals. Patients may select their meal in advance of service using a tally system. In addition to the regular entree, up to four alternative entrees are available.

Meal Plans

Food and Nutrition Services provides a variety of meal plans to meet the needs of our patients. Their meal plans are prescribed by the medical providers based on the patient's specific needs. Examples of the meal plans are as follows:

  • House Meal Plan - This meal plan meets the needs of most of the male patients who are at low nutritional risk and may, or may not, need to lose weight. House 1 Meal Plan - This meal plan meets the estimated needs for maintenance of female patients who are at low nutritional risk. This meal plan may also be used to assist with weight loss for both males and females. (Note: This meal plan is highly recommended for patients with diabetes.)
  • House 2 Meal Plan - This meal plan has the same overall characteristics as House or House 1 but provides more calories. This meal plan is not appropriate for diabetics because of the high carbohydrate content, especially at breakfast
  • High fiber, mechanical soft, pureed, and liquid diets are also available for patients when needed with an order from the medical provider. Additional snacks are provided to patients as necessary.
  • A vegetarian diet is available upon patient request. Religious and cultural needs and preferences are honored on an individual basis.

Clinical Nutrition Services

Upon admission, the medical staff screens each patient for nutrition-related issues.

Within ten days of admission, each patient will be assessed for nutritional status by a Registered Dietitian (RD). This person meets with the patient to discuss their nutrition goals and provide appropriate nutrition education.

The patient's nutrition goals are reviewed and education is provided by the RD at least quarterly, and patients are monitored for nutrition-related issues.

Recommendations are made by the RD to the medical provider to made appropriate nutrition interventions.

Patients at high nutrition risk are monitored by the RD, who participates in their treatment planning and staffings.

Education on individual nutrition issues is provided to patients per request through their medical provider.

Nutrition Education

Healthy Beginnings is a weekly group held by an RD that covers topics related to basic nutrition. The group is held on the civil side of the Hospital for all civil units.

Individual education on each patient's atypical antipsychotic medications and individual disease states is provided to patients by the RD.

Nutrition Services participates in Wellness Fairs for patients and staff, providing nutrition education and activities.
