Enforcement Action Definitions
 
The purpose of this glossary is to assist you in understanding the words and phrases used by the Bureau of Emergency Medical Services (Bureau) in disciplinary/enforcement actions. These summaries are not legal definitions, but rather general descriptions of words and phrases used in the Bureau's enforcement website.

NOTE: The term "EMT" used in these definitions refers to emergency medical technicians at any level (Basic, Intermediate or Paramedic). The term "Bureau" refers to the Bureau of Emergency Medical Services and the term "ADHS" refers to the Arizona Department of Health Services.

CIVIL PENALTY - means the Medical Director of the Bureau of Emergency Medical Services, on behalf of the ADHS Director, may levy a monetary fine against an EMT for failure to comply with one or more Arizona Revised Statutes or Arizona Administrative Codes (Rules).

DECREE OF CENSURE - means an administrative action by the Medical Director of the Bureau of Emergency Medical Services pursuant to A.R.S. § 36-2211(D)(2)(a).  The Decree of Censure is placed in the EMT's certification file as a permanent record of the action.

DENIAL OF RECERTIFICATION - means an order issued by the ADHS Director or his/her designee denying recertification of an EMT.

PROBATION - means an order issued by the Medical Director of the Bureau of Emergency Medical Services permitting the individual to practice as an EMT but under strict terms and conditions as monitored by the Department.

REVOCATION - means an order issued by the ADHS Director or his/her designee revoking certification status of an EMT.

SUSPENSION - means an order issued by the Medical Director of the Bureau of Emergency Medical Services suspending an EMT's certification temporarily (for a set period of time).
