Participating child care providers receive:

  1. reduced licensing fees
  2. a state-issued Empower Center designation
  3. an Empower Pack

Empower Pack is a new opportunity for child care providers. The program empowers children to make good choices about nutrition, physical activity, and tobacco using age-appropriate vehicles including costumed characters and a coloring book. In addition to reduced licensing fees, participating child care providers, or Empower Centers, receive an Empower Pack. The guidelines and tools included in this Empower Pack can be easily incorporated into the everyday routine of child care to instill healthy life choices.

This 3-year pilot program was designed to provide relief to child care providers facing increased licensing fees while also addressing the alarming rise in childhood obesity and the harmful effects of tobacco. The program also complements and builds on the success of the Champions for Change campaign.

Part of the Arizona Nutrition Network, Champions for Change provides nutrition and physical activity messages to participants of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as the Food Stamp Program. Champions for Change helps families make healthy food choices and be more active. The statewide campaign includes: community education activities like classes and food demonstrations; newsletters and recipes for parents; and ads on TV and radio.
