Updated federal guidelines offer state and local public health and school officials a range of options for responding to 2009 H1N1 influenza in schools, depending on how severe the flu may be in their communities. The Arizona Department of Health Services has decided to endorse the collaborative joint position statement “Healthcare Personnel at High-Risk for Severe Influenza Illness: Care of Patients with Suspected or Confirmed Novel H1N1 Influenza”, which recommends the use of a surgical mask when caring for a patient with suspected influenza (except when performing an aerosol-generating procedure).
