Folic Acid
Why take folic acid?
Because …We all need folic acid in our bodies to make new cells.
New cells help your body fight off illness. Folic acid can help prevent some illnesses such as heart disease and certain cancers.
Most Importantly …
Folic acid has shown to help prevent major birth defects in a baby’s developing brain and spine. These birth defects are called neural tube defects or NTDs. Common NTDs include anencephaly and spina bifida.
Even if you do not plan to become pregnant, take a multivitamin with 400 micrograms (mcg) of folic acid every day!
This will help you prevent brain and spine birth defects in your baby if you ever become pregnant. Note: Research shows that more than half of the pregnancies in the U.S. are unplanned.
