With almost two out of three adults in Arizona either overweight or obese, the weight of the state is definitely not within a healthy range. The weight of the nation is even worse with more than two out of three adults in this category.
Obesity rates among Arizona’s children are equally alarming—our state ranks 15th in the nation for childhood obesity. Obesity rates among children nationwide were about 17 percent in 2010, more than tripling since 1970.
The impact on health is overwhelming—being overweight or obese Increases the risk of cancer, arthritis, joint problems, gall bladder disease, liver disease, kidney disease, diabetes, dementia and more. The economic impact is staggering as well. Obesity-related healthcare costs the nation $147 billion annually.
The Arizona Department of Health Services' (ADHS) strategic plan identifies "Promoting Nutrition and Physical Activity to Reduce Obesity" as one of its winnable battles and has made significant strides in developing and facilitating many related projects and initiatives. Raising awareness about this issue continues to be a struggle.
