Meaningful Use
Syndromic Surveillance
The Arizona Department of Health Services is not currently accepting electronic submissions of syndromic surveillance messages for meaningful use. ADHS plans to implement syndromic surveillance for meaningful use utilizing Biosense and the PHIN Messaging Guide for Syndromic Surveillance.![]()
The Stage 1, meaningful use objective, measure and exclusion criteria for syndromic surveillance are:
- Objective
Capability to submit electronic syndromic surveillance data to public health agencies and actual submission according to applicable law and practice. - Measure
Performed at least one test of certified EHR technology’s capacity to provide electronic syndromic surveillance data to public health agencies and follow-up submission if the test is successful (unless none of the public health agencies to which an eligible hospital, critical access hospital (CAH) or eligible professional (EP) submits such information has the capacity to receive the information electronically). - Exclusion
If no public health agency to which the eligible hospital, CAH or EP submits such information has the capacity to receive the information electronically, then the eligible hospital, CAH or EP would be excluded from this requirement or if an EP does not collect any reportable syndromic information on their patients during the EHR reporting period, then the EP is excluded from this requirement.
