The results of a new report on Arizona’s nursing home residents are now available from the Arizona Department of Health Services’ Division of Licensing Services. The report, Profiling Arizona’s Nursing Home Residents 1999-2001, was conducted by researchers at the University of Arizona and funded by St. Luke’s Health Initiatives. It provides the first comprehensive analysis of the health status and needs of people living in Arizona’s nursing homes.
Mary Wiley, Assistant Director of Division of Licensure Services, stated that her office initiated and has been a major supporter of this research as a way to disseminate information to improve quality of care in Arizona’s nursing homes.
“We are delighted that this information is now available and we encourage individuals and groups to review the report and use it in planning and quality initiatives,” Wiley said.
Over 83,000 individuals were admitted to Arizona’s nursing homes during the years 1999, 2000 and 2001. On a single day of each of these years, almost 13,000 individuals were living in these homes.
The profiling report is part of major statewide efforts directed by Governor Janet Napolitano to respond to the long-term care needs of Arizona’s growing older-adult population.
Gerri Lamb, the principal investigator for the report and Associate Professor at the University of Arizona College of Nursing, said that the results of this first nursing home profile should be very useful to understand the challenges of providing outstanding nursing home care and to guide future quality initiatives in the state.
