Members of the Medical Community and State Agencies Hold Health Fair
The state of Arizona today announced a health fair will be held on Saturday, Oct. 22 at Wesley Bolin Memorial Plaza, 1700 W. Washington in Phoenix from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for all Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita evacuees currently living in Arizona. Evacuees will receive a variety of free medical screenings and services.
“Now that evacuees have had a few weeks to establish a new place to live and get settled here in Arizona, we want to make sure they have an opportunity to assess their overall health care needs and have access to providers to address those needs,” said Linda Martin of Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS). AHCCCS and Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) have worked together with the Governor’s Office and other agencies to organize the health fair.
“Many health and medical records were destroyed by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita,” said Pat Adams, Director of Vital Records at ADHS. “The health fair will be a good time for Arizona’s new residents to begin re-establishing their medical history.”
Representatives from the Arizona medical community, ADHS, and AHCCCS will be onsite to assist evacuees with health assessments. More than 50 vendors and providers will participate including state agency programs, doctors, dentists, and non-profit organizations.
Services are free to all evacuees and include: diabetes testing; high blood pressure screenings; blood sugar and cholesterol screenings; hearing exams; crisis counseling, outreach and referral information; information about cardiovascular disease; information about Folic acid and nutrition; tobacco education information and access to smoking cessation programs; information about immunizations; mobile on-site mammography; fire safety information; and, information about staying safe in the Arizona sun.
Educational lectures, live music and free refreshments will also be provided.
