“Health Disparities and Chronic Disease: From Awareness to Action,” a conference to increase awareness of health disparities in Arizona, will be held April 13-15 at the Black Canyon Conference Center in Phoenix.
The Arizona Department of Health Services, in partnership with American Heart Association, Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System, APS, St. Luke’s Health Initiatives, Arizona Department of Economic Security (DES), and Arizona Prevention Resource Center are hosting the conference. Presentations will include nationally recognized speakers and local Arizona experts discussing disparities, and multiple sessions that highlight successful approaches to addressing disparities from various regions of the state.
In Arizona, the life expectancy of white, non-Hispanics is 20 years longer than for Native Americans; African-Americans have a 50% greater mortality rates from heart disease than whites; and, Hispanics are three times more likely to die from the effects of diabetes than are whites, according to recent Department of Health and American Heart Association statistics. The many factors that contribute to these disparities and recommendations for improvement will be the focus of the conference.
Attendance is limited to approximately 200 people. Registration information is available at
www.azdhs.gov/hsd/conf.htm. For more information, please call Geri Tebo at (602) 319-5817.
