The Arizona Department of Health Services State Health Laboratory confirmed today the presence of Salmonella bacteria from a non-pasteurized raw milk sample produced by Meadowayne Dairy in Colorado City, Arizona. The sample was obtained from a retail outlet in Yavapai County. No reported cases of Salmonella have been linked to the consumption of raw milk from Meadowayne and the unknown quantity of Salmonella in the sample makes it uncertain if there is an adequate amount of the bacteria to cause illness in humans. As a precaution, the Health Department is advising consumers to discard, or return to the retailer, any raw milk produced by Meadowayne with a use by date of 12/12/2005. This alert is limited to raw, non-pasteurized milk with a use by date of 12/12/2005.

The Arizona Department of Health Services has issued an embargo notice to all Arizona County Health Departments, instructing them to remove all raw milk produced by Meadowayne Dairy with a use by date of 12/12/2005 from sale.

Salmonella is a bacterial disease typically transmitted by consuming food from infected animals or contaminated by feces from infected animals or humans. Raw and undercooked food from animal origin are typically involved in the transmission of Salmonella, particularly raw milk and raw milk products, raw eggs and raw eggs products, undercooked poultry and meats, and contaminated water. Symptoms commonly include a sudden onset of abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting may occur. Serious complications and even death are uncommon except in the very young, very old and immunosuppressed individuals.
