Arizona Department of Health Services Director Catherine Eden today announced the selection of John C. Cooper to serve as superintendent of the Arizona State Hospital.

Cooper, who is currently hospital administrator at the New Mexico Department of Health’s New Mexico Rehabilitation Center, has more than two decades of experience in behavioral health.

“John’s education and work experience have prepared him well for this job,” said Director Eden. “He possesses the skills needed to continue building on the progress we’ve made in providing services to some of our state’s most vulnerable citizens.”

As administrator for the New Mexico Rehabilitation Center, Cooper oversees a 41-bed, accredited specialty hospital. The facility also provides rehabilitation services for persons recovering from conditions such as stroke, spinal cord injuries, neurological disorders, traumatic brain injury, amputations and orthopedic problems.

Prior to his position there, Cooper was director of clinical services for the Broward Partnership for the Homeless, a 200 bed homeless shelter in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and divisional director of the Lower Keys Medical Center –dePoo facility in Key West.

He also has worked as a licensed mental health counselor, and child and family therapist.

Cooper has a master’s degree in Health Service Administration from Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. He will begin his new role on April 18.
