Arizona Department of Health Services Director Susan Gerard today announced requests for contract and grant applications to advance the prevention and detection of chronic disease.
“Heart disease, cancer, pulmonary disease, and stroke account for nearly two-thirds of all deaths in Arizona,” Gerard said. “We are committed to advancing prevention and detection services to save lives and to reduce the burden of chronic disease in our state.”
Up to $3 million will be allocated in FY 2006 to a variety of projects deemed most capable of addressing chronic disease prevention and/or early detection services in Arizona.
The funding comes from the voter approved Proposition 303, which increased the state tax on tobacco products. A portion of the tobacco tax revenue (2%) is directed to the prevention and early detection of the four leading disease-related causes of death -- diseases of the heart, malignant neoplasms (cancer), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cerebrovascular disease (stroke).
Last year, the Arizona Department of Health Services unveiled the Arizona Chronic Disease Plan, a framework for developing a coordinated and integrated approach to chronic disease management in Arizona.
