The Arizona Department of Health Services State Health Lab confirmed today that the State has its first locally acquired case of influenza for 2006 in Maricopa County.

Influenza, or the flu, was confirmed in a woman in her 80s from the East Valley. The woman is recovering in a Valley hospital.

“This case indicates the beginning of our flu season here in Arizona,” said Susan Gerard, Director of the Arizona Department of Health Services. “In addition to getting our flu shots, we all need to be vigilant in good hygiene -- covering our cough in our sleeves, washing our hands frequently and staying home when we are sick.”

“As many of us prepare for a Thanksgiving meal with those we care about, this is a good reminder about what we don’t want to be passing along with the cranberry sauce,” said Dr. Bob England, director of Maricopa County’s Department of Public Health.

Although it is unclear exactly where this woman picked up the flu, England added that she is a good example for everyone.

“No matter how healthy you are, if you come into contact with a vulnerable population – that is seniors, kids, pregnant women or anyone whose immune system is compromised – then you should be getting your flu shot,” said Dr. England.

Flu vaccine is now available throughout Arizona. For a complete listing of where you can get your flu vaccine, log on to www.fluaz.org or call 602-263-8856, or 800-352-3792 within area codes 520 & 928.
