(PHOENIX) Dec. 26, 2006 – Increased
tobacco taxes and strict new indoor smoking restrictions
make 2007 the year to commit to quit tobacco.
The Arizona Department of Health Services’ Tobacco
Education Prevention Program (ADHS TEPP), together with
its statewide partners including the Maricopa County
Tobacco Use Prevention Program (MACTUPP), has launched a
new marketing campaign to assure people can find the
resources they need when they resolve to quit.
The Department of Health Services’ tobacco-control
program kicked off the year-long campaign as part of its
continued commitment to assist tobacco users in
quitting. Beginning today and running through December
2007, the new campaign features Nick, who has frank
conversations with viewers that mirror the true-life
stages of quitting: pre-contemplation, contemplation,
setting a quit date, post-quitting, slip/relapse, and
six months of maintained quitting. It is a compelling
storyline that follows Nick as he battles with his
smoking addiction. Nick directs people to
1-800-55-66-222 the Arizona Smokers’ Helpline (ASHLine)
toll-free phone number and to
http://www.ashline.org.
Through ASHLine, people can receive phone counseling,
learn about free quit tobacco programs in their area and
receive reduced cost medications.
“The campaign is based on the experiences of real people
-- combined with sound scientific methodology,” said
Susan Gerard, state health director. “Nick is meant to
compel people to find out more about the many resources
that we offer. As a former smoker, I can relate to what
Nick says.”
The new ads will also follow Hector, who will face
similar struggles with tobacco, and who will share his
story with Spanish-speaking viewers.
ADHS TEPP, together with ASHLine and Maricopa County,
provides quit tobacco programs, phone counseling, and 50
percent reduced cost vouchers for nicotine patches, gum
or lozenges, and prescription Zyban™ to assist in
smoking cessation. For more information visit
http://www.ashline.org
or call 1-800-55-66-222.

and Fast Facts about health improvements for a smoker’s
