Smokers in Arizona this week discovered
that the price of a carton of cigarettes jumped by more
than eight dollars, thanks to two voter approved tobacco
tax increases.
Instead of taking out a loan to fund the habit, the
Arizona Department of Health Services suggests that
smokers make a healthier choice: Say goodbye to
cigarettes in 2006.
“Emptying your purse, wallet or bank account to buy
cigarettes just doesn’t add up,” said Susan Gerard,
state health director. “There’s no better time than now
to make a positive change in your life, and we have the
tools to help.”
The Department’s Tobacco Education and Prevention
Program provides statewide programs to help smokers
break the habit. The program works with local
communities to help people succeed at becoming tobacco
free.
For more information about smoking cessation classes and
cessation counseling services around the state, visit
www.ASHline.org or
call 1-800-55-66-222.
The web site also provides information for non-smokers
on how to help a loved one quit, and information for
healthcare providers on how to talk to patients who
smoke.
Additional materials, including cessation tips and fast
facts about health improvements associated with quitting
also are available at
