The Arizona Department of Health Services announced today the appointment of Wayne Tormala as Bureau Chief of the state’s Tobacco Education and Prevention Program. Tormala, Community Initiatives Coordinator for the City of Phoenix, has earned national recognition as a champion of human service programs in the public and private sector.

“We are very excited because Wayne will bring the energy and skills to this program to make it one of the best in the country,” said Susan Gerard, Health Service Director. “He has strong management and leadership skills, and has extensive experience working with community groups and building capacity. He is very innovative and has built award-winning programs from scratch.”

Tormala’s 35-year career has focused on youth and senior services, mental health, HIV/AIDS care and prevention, environmental conservation, world hunger and social welfare. He has served as the Community Initiatives Coordinator for City of Phoenix since 1997. He also worked in leadership roles for the Arizona AIDS Foundation, Bread for the World, and the Washington D.C.-based Institute for Policy Studies.

“I’m very excited to have this opportunity to address the urgent issue of tobacco education and prevention, and look forward to working with the many people and organizations who are so critical to success at both the state and local levels,” Tormala said.

Tormala’s many honors include: Recognition by Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for the City of Phoenix’s Family Self-Sufficiency Program, an invitation from New York’s Mayor Bloomberg to participate in a national conference about outreach strategies for people with disabilities, recognition by national
associations for city management for the City of Phoenix’s Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) model, and selection by the Heritage Foundation to address its national summit about successfully reaching “hard-to-reach” populations.

“He will be a major asset to the Health Department, and to the state,” Gerard said. “I look forward to working with Wayne as he strengthens our anti-tobacco program, which plays a major role in curbing smoking among youth and adults in Arizona.”

Tormala will begin at the Health Department’s Tobacco Education and Prevention Program this spring.
