Mark Fenton, a renowned expert, instructor and author in the walking field,
addressed local residents, city officials and community partners about how to
create more pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods at the Southern Arizona Walkable
Communities Workshop in South Tucson. The workshop focused on what walkable
communities are, why they’re important, and what people can do to create such an
environment. The goal of the workshop was to train participants on how to
conduct walkability assessments by completing neighborhood audits and how to
establish appropriate priorities for improvement. For instance, establishing
safe routes to school was emphasized during the training. Participants were then
encouraged to help communities create more pedestrian-friendly environments by
replicating the assessment and planning process in their own neighborhoods.
