LOCAL PROJECTS

"Yuma on the Move - Promoting Physical Activity"

Focus Area: Physical Activity
HA 2010
Objectives:
#3
Increase the proportion of adults who engage regularly, preferably daily, in moderate or vigorous physical activity.

#4
Reduce the proportion of adults who engage in no physical activity.
Description:

During the spring of 1997, a Yuma community task force was formed to promote physical activity.  The task force became known as "Yuma on the Move".  Their vision for the people of Yuma is that all would understand the benefits of Physical Activity, include it in their lifestyle, feel better and be healthier.

A Message Campaign was launched, targeting people who were not thinking about being physically active and those who have thought about it but have not taken any action.  Messages appeared in TV Public Service Announcements, work-site newsletters, and in posters and presentations at worksites and in the community.

A Work Site Challenges Campaign was initiated in the Fall of 2001 and will be repeated in 2002.

"Buckle up Cochise County"

Focus Area: Injury & Violence Prevention
HA 2010
Objective:
#1
Reduce injury, disability and death caused by motor vehicle crashes.
Description:

The project provides for alternative sentencing for drivers who are cited for failure to wear seatbelts. In place of a fine, defendants can either purchase a child safety seat which can be donated, or write a 300-500 word essay in support of safety restraint usage. The local newspaper prints the essays.

In addition, the project presents a multi-media safety program to area third-graders to encourage a lifelong habit of seatbelt usage. A resource directory has also been developed to inform the community of the availability of occupant protection.
