Sickle Cell Program
 
The Arizona Sickle Cell Anemia Program is the result of  state legislation and is administered and funded through the Office for Children with Special Health Care Needs (OCSHCN).  

The program emphasis has been on:

  • Identifying, diagnosing and treating newborns with sickle cell disease.
      
  • Preventing physical impairments and deaths due to strokes, sepsis and bacterial infections.

little boy The program provides statewide screening for sickle cell and other hemoglobin disorders. Confidential counseling services are provided to educate families who have a newborn with positive screening results.  A knowledgeable sickle cell counselor will assist families in making informed decisions regarding child bearing.
