Antibiotic Resistance Surveillance and Prevention Program

The program is responsible for monitoring bacterial infections that are resistant to antibiotics and providing education about appropriate use of antibiotics to health care providers and the public.

The program:

  • maintains a registry of: invasive disease caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae and its susceptibility pattern
  • isolates of vancomycin resistant Enterococci reported by clinical laboratories;
  • provides education to the public to raise awareness of the problem of antibiotic resistance and their role in prevention;
  • provides information to health care providers regarding appropriate use of antibiotics and treatment guidelines; 
  • collaborates with professional medical societies, community-based organizations and pharmaceutical companies to coordinate and provide professional education through the State of Arizona Group on Understanding Antibiotic Resistant Organisms (SAGUARO) coalition;
  • leads an antibiotic resistance working group to develop guidelines specific for Arizona;
  • through the Arizona Department of Health Services; Bureau of State Laboratory Services
  • participates in the National Antibiotic Resistance Monitoring System.
