International Infection Prevention Week (IIPW)

Infection prevention is everyone's business. To heighten awareness of the need to protect patients from healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), the Arizona HAI Advisory Committee is partnering with the Grand Canyon Chapter of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) to support International Infection Prevention Week (IIPW), which occurs globally October 16-22, 2011.

To commemorate the 25th anniversary of IIPW, this partnership will plan and participate in a number of local IIPW activities and eventsPDF that include:

  • Governor Proclamation — The Governor of Arizona, Janice K. Brewer, proclaimed October 16-22, 2011 as Arizona Infection Prevention Week.
  • Vaccine Round-Up Final Event Results: 3,498 vaccinesInfluenza Vaccine Round-Up on October 18, 2011 — We are trying to set an Arizona flu vaccine record! Are you interested in being involved? Here's what you need to do:
    1. Hold a flu clinic on October 18, 2011
    2. Fill out & submit the participation letterPDF
    3. Track the number of vaccines given
    4. Submit your vaccination totals online every 2 hours

    Arizona is attempting to set a record for the most influenza vaccines given on one day. The syringe graphic to the right is a representation of the number of vaccines given so far. Check back periodically on October 18 as we will update the numbers every few hours throughout the day and will continue to update as additional numbers are submitted in the days following. Thanks for celebrating International Infection Prevention Week by getting vaccinated and keeping your friends and family healthy!

  • Hand Hygiene Flash Mob on October 19, 2011 — Banner Thunderbird Medical Center is partnering up with students from Greenway High School to organize a flash mob to promote "Hand Hygiene Saves Lives". Check out another hand hygiene flash mob organized by MetroWest Medical Center.

  • IIPW Webinar Series - APIC is honored to be joined by partner organizations in delivering five educational webinars emphasizing the 2011 theme, "Infection Prevention is Everyone's Business."
