Highlights
from the Tuberculosis in Arizona, 2001 report.
Two hundred eighty-nine cases of active tuberculosis (TB) were reported in
Arizona in 2001. The 2001 case rate of 5.4 per 100,000 population is
higher than the Healthy People 2010 target but lower than the national
rate for 2001. In Arizona, the pulmonary/laryngeal form of
tuberculosis was the most commonly reported form of the disease with 219
cases receiving this classification. Resistance to at least isoniazid (INH)
without resistance to rifampin (RIF) was reported in 4% of the cases
with the sensitivity testing results reported. Of the identified risk
factors for the development of tuberculosis, excessive alcohol use,
foreign birth, and homelessness were among the most frequently reported
risk factors for Arizona cases.
