Highlights
from Tuberculosis Surveillance Report, Arizona, 2002.
Two hundred sixty-three cases of active tuberculosis (TB) were reported in
Arizona in 2002. The 2002 case rate of 4.8 per 100,000 population is
higher than the Healthy People 2010 target but lower than the national
rate for 2002. In Arizona, the pulmonary/laryngeal form of
tuberculosis was the most commonly reported form of the disease with 218
cases receiving this classification. Total INH resistance was reported in
5.3% of the cases
with the sensitivity testing results reported. Persons resistant to at
least INH and RIF (multi-drug resistant) accounted for only 0.5% of
Arizona TB cases in 2002. Of the identified risk
factors for the development of tuberculosis, excessive alcohol use,
foreign birth, and homelessness were among the most frequently reported
risk factors for Arizona cases.
