from the Tuberculosis in Arizona, 1996 report.
Two hundred eighty-two cases of active tuberculosis (TB) were reported
in Arizona in 1996. The 1996 case rate of 6.3 per 100,000 population is
higher than the Healthy People 2000 target but lower than the national
rate for 1996. In Arizona, the pulmonary/laryngeal form of
tuberculosis was the most commonly reported form of the disease with 231
cases receiving this classification. Resistance to at least isoniazid (INH)
without resistance to rifampin (RIF) was reported in 2.2% of the cases
with the sensitivity testing results reported. Of the identified risk
factors for the development of tuberculosis, excessive alcohol use,
foreign birth, and homelessness were among the most frequently reported
risk factors for Arizona cases.
