Highlights from the Tuberculosis in Arizona, 1997 report.

Two hundred ninety-six cases of active tuberculosis (TB) were reported in Arizona in 1997. The 1997 case rate of 6.4 per 100,000 population is higher than the Healthy People 2000 target but lower than the national rate for 1997. In Arizona, the pulmonary/laryngeal form of tuberculosis was the most commonly reported form of the disease with 243 cases receiving this classification. Resistance to at least isoniazid (INH) without resistance to rifampin (RIF) was reported in 8.2% of the cases with the sensitivity testing results reported. Of the identified risk factors for the development of tuberculosis, excessive alcohol use, foreign birth, and homelessness were among the most frequently reported risk factors for Arizona cases.
