Highlights
from Tuberculosis Surveillance Report, Arizona, 2003.
Two hundred ninety-five cases of active tuberculosis (TB) were reported in
Arizona in 2003. The 2003 case rate of 5.2 per 100,000 population is
higher than the Healthy People 2010 target and exceeds the national
rate (5.1 per 100,000) for the first time. In Arizona, the pulmonary/laryngeal form of
tuberculosis was the most commonly reported form of the disease with 251
cases receiving this classification. Resistance to at least isoniazid (INH)
without resistance to rifampin (RIF) was reported in 5.3% of the cases
with the sensitivity testing results reported. Persons resistant to at
least INH and RIF (multi-drug resistant) accounted for only 0.9% of
Arizona TB cases in 2003. Of the identified risk
factors for the development of tuberculosis, excessive alcohol use,
foreign birth, and homelessness were among the most frequently reported
risk factors for Arizona cases.
