What is the County Prenatal Block Grant?

Each County is provided with funding to develop programs on a variety of topics: prenatal care, childbirth, breastfeeding, parenting, care seat training and home safety. Services vary from county to county and may also include folic acid and education, prenatal vitamins, pregnancy testing and infant immuzinations. To find out what your county provides, contact your local health department.

How do I contact my county's CPBG program?

Each county has a health department and a CPBG Coordinator. Some of the counties refer to it as the Maternal Child Health Program. Call your local County Health Department directly to reach the program coordinator.

What services do you provide under the County Prenatal Block Grant?

The Arizona Department of Health Services does not directly provide any prenatal services. However, there are contracts in place with all 15 of the Arizona County Health Departments. Each county has determined, based on a needs assessment, what the priority needs are for their community. Services include, but are not limited to, pregnancy testing, prenatal, childbirth and breastfeeding classes, prenatal supplements, case management, preconception health education, screening for perinatal mood disorders, immunizations, and child/home safety.

I will be moving to Arizona this month. I am pregnant and currently receiving MediCal. What is available in Arizona and how do I get services?

Our Medicaid program here is called Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS). There are other programs that you may also be eligible to receive. (See Pregnancy and Breastfeeding Hotline for more information).

Is there an income eligibility criteria required to receive services from my county’s Prenatal Block Grant program?

Counties are not required to follow any income eligibility guidelines in order to provide services. However, the program tends to attract women who have no insurance and are not qualified for any other program.
