What is
the.... Pregnancy Services Program?
The Pregnancy Services Program is a new initiative that was established by the State Legislature in 2006 to provide individual grants to non-profit agencies whose primary function is to assist pregnant women seeking alternatives to abortion. Program funding must be used to provide pregnancy related services that are medically accurate. Services are provided throughout pregnancy and up to the child’s first birthday.
Why is the program needed?
The Pregnancy Services Program was developed to assist pregnant women who may require support during their pregnancy. In addition to receiving options counseling, clients receive assistance in obtaining prenatal care, referrals to community and state resources, and education on pregnancy related topics.
After the birth of the child, the client is provided parenting skills education and training, education on infant/child development, education on preconception care, as well as information on the childhood immunization schedule and the importance of age appropriate immunizations.
Status on Pregnancy and Childbirth in Arizona:
- In 2005 there were 106,776 pregnancies in Arizona compared to 106,252 in 2004, an increase of 0.5 percent.
- Of the 106,776 pregnancies reported in 2005, 83.2% were to women between the ages of 15-44 years old.
- In 2006, 78% of the 102,042 infants born in Arizona were born to women who received prenatal care starting in the first trimester.
- In 2006, 5.5 % of infants were born to mothers who smoked or drank during their pregnancy.
What are the goals of the program?
The goal of the Pregnancy Services Program is to provide individual grants to eligible groups/agencies that can provide medically accurate services and programs related to pregnancy. The priority service area focuses on positive public health activities for pregnant women and their children.
The grants maybe used to provide these additional pregnancy related services:
- Prenatal vitamins
- Folic acid education
- Education on prenatal care
- Education on the
benefits of breastfeeding and referral local resources that support
breastfeeding mothers.
What has the program achieved?
The Pregnancy Services Program grants were awarded in February of 2007 to 13 applicants who will be providing services in 23 sites.
