SunWise Skin Cancer Prevention Program
Arizona is home to three of the sunniest cities in the country: Yuma (1), Phoenix (4), and Tucson (5). It's hard to go outside in our state without being in the sun. While the sun provides important vitamin D, too much exposure can lead to skin cancer – the most diagnosed cancer in the United States. The best way to prevent skin cancer is to protect your skin from UV rays, both natural and artificial. Arizona was one of the first states in the nation to teach sun safety education in schools (mandated by state law) and in child care (encouraged through the Empower Program).
The 2015 "Be SunWise and Play Sun Smart" poster contest winner Jennifer Villas and her teacher Lucia Bigelow and their families were celebrated with on-field awards at the Arizona Diamondbacks May 7 baseball game. Jennifer's winning artwork was selected by the Diamondbacks from more than 3100 entries and will be the official campaign poster for the SunWise Program 2015-2016. Jennifer is a 7th-grade student at Calabasas School in Rio Rico, Arizona.
