An inpatient discharge occurs when a person who was admitted to a hospital leaves that hospital. A person who has been hospitalized more than once in a given calendar year will be counted multiple times as a discharge and included more than once in the hospital inpatient discharge data set; thus, the numbers in this report are for discharges, not persons. The emergency room (ER) and the inpatient hospitalization data are mutually exclusive. The ER data include only those who were not admitted as inpatients. Patient's race/ethnicity is available for hospital inpatients but not emergency room visits. All county-level data are based on patient zip code of residence and not the location of hospitalization. The data does not include Department of Defense, Indian Health Services, Veteran's Administration or state licensed pyschiatric hospitals. All discharges are for the residents of Arizona. Discharges of out-of-state residents are not included in this report. Diagnostic groupings and code numbers are based on the International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM). Up to nine diagnoses are coded for each discharge. All mentions (or all occurrences) of the diagnosis regardless of the order on the medical record were used to identify the discharges for influenza in Table 1-Table 4 (ICD-9-CM code 487), all-listed diagnoses were used to identify the discharges for influenza and pneumonia-related inpatient hospital stays and emergency room visits in Table 5 and Table 6 (ICD-9-CM codes 480-487). The discharge record may include more than one diagnosis specific to influenza (i.e., 487.0 - influenza both with pneumonia and 487.8 - influenza with other manifestations). Therefore, the sum of occurrences of all-listed diagnoses in Table 1 (the column sum in this table) is greater than the total number of influenza-related discharges.
