rate= The number of suicides per 100,000 population in specified group.

Numbers in parentheses are the numbers of suicide deaths in specified age groups of Arizona residents

Arizonans who ended their own lives in 1995 were 1.7 years older on average than Arizonans who died from suicide in 1994. In each year from 1985 to 1995, the suicide rate among elderly persons (65 years and older) was the highest among all age groups in Arizona. In 1995, the highest suicide rate was among Arizonans 25-44 years old.

Three of the age groups showed a worsening suicide mortality picture in Arizona between 1994 and 1995: 25-34, 35-44 and 65+. Suicide rates for persons 55-64 years of age declined for the third consecutive year. The 1995 rate of 19.8 suicides per 100,000 Arizonans 55-64 years old was in fact the lowest rate of the 1985-1995 period.
