The average annual age-adjusted suicide mortality rates (calculated for the entire eleven-year period 1985-1995) for American Indian and non-Hispanic white residents of Arizona were at least 87 percent higher than the year 2000 national health objective of 10.5 suicides per 100,000 population. In contrast, the average annual 1985-1995 suicide mortality rate among Asians was 40 percent lower than the objective.

The average age of Arizonans who died in 1995 from a self-inflicted injury was 43.9 years. Compared to non-Hispanic whites, on average American Indian were 14.5 years younger at the time of suicide death, Hispanics were 14.3 years younger, while Blacks were 12.9 years younger. The majority (476 out of 704, or 67.6) of white non-Hispanic suicide victims in 1994 were at least 35 years old. In contrast, only 31.6 percent of suicides among Blacks, 34.8 percent of suicides among Hispanics, and 34.2 percent of suicides among American Indians were at least this old.

The 1990 census counts multiplied by eleven were used as denominators for average annual rate calculation.
