The age-adjusted rates presented in this report were computed by the direct method, that is by applying the age-pecific death rate for suicide to the standard population distributed by age. The total U.S. population as enumerated in 1940 was selected as the standard. The"age-adjustment" or "age-standardization" removes the effects of the age differences in population composition.
